Walk FAR for NAAR: We did it!
by Marlene McConnell, Co-Chair,
Walk FAR for NAAR National Capital Area

Thanks to the grit and determination of the walk committee, Walk Day 2001 was a fantastic success! An estimated 5,000 people turned out to walk the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in the first Walk F.A.R. for NAAR National Capital Area. Over $516,000 has been collected!

Five NAAR walks were held on September 29th and 30th, and $2 million was collected overall! "We are extremely gratified with the support that the National Capital Area has shown for autism and NAAR", said NAAR President Prisca Chen Marvin, who attended the National Capital Area walk with her family team, "Helen's Heroes". By helping to raise both awareness and much needed funds for research, we are one step closer to finding effective treatments and eventually a cure for autism spectrum disorders.

NAAR is holding walks in 11 cities in 2001, and plans to add at least five cities in 2002.

News from the National Office of ASA
by Joseph S. Schneider

The Autism Society of America has discontinued collecting subscriptions for both the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders (JADD) and Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities (FOCUS). All subscriptions will be refunded, along with a letter of explanation. There will be no exceptions. ASA will continue to honor all prior subscription commitments.

ASA has been in contact with representatives from the publishers of both journals and has made an effort to replace the current outdated system with one that would be more efficient and customer friendly. We are still exploring options for our members to receive the subscription benefit but have not, as of yet, reached an agreement. We will keep you informed of developments as they occur.

If you have any questions or comments regarding this change, please send them, in writing, to: Membership & Chapter Services Department c/o Autism Society of America, 7910 Woodmont Avenue, Suite 300, Bethesda, MD 20814.
