FOCUS Transition Series


The ARC of Anne Arundel County is offering a series of discussions and presentations designed to address the concerns of families whose child will soon be leaving the school system.

The sessions are held monthly at 7:00 pm at Anne Arundel Community College's Cade Building. The sessions are free and open to anyone interested in the subject.

The dates and topics for the sessions in this series are as follows:

Thursday, December 6th
Employment and meaningful day program options

Representatives from the various county agencies that provide
these services will be on hand.

Wednesday, January 9th
Federal programs

A representative from the Social Security Administration will be on hand.

Thursday, February 7th
Financial and estate planning

The speakers will provide information about the steps families
should take to properly ensure that a person with a developmental disability does not lose funding from entitlement programs because of well intentioned but poorly executed financial and Estate planning.

Wednesday, March 6th
Guardianship

A speaker from the University of Maryland Law School will dis-cuss this subject and help participants better understand whether it is the right choice for families of persons with a developmental disability.

Thursday, April 11th
Service models and indicators of quality

There will be a panel discussion that will give families an idea of the kinds of services available, how to choose from among the various providers in the county, and the kinds of questions to ask to ensure that the quality of service described is being provided.

Wednesday, May 15th
Circles of support

The speakers will describe how natural supports in the commu-nity, as well as the supports available from agencies, serve to pro-vide a smooth transition from school to adult day services.

Upcoming Conference on
Transitioning Students
with Disabilities


On December 10th, from 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 P.M, at the Annapolis Radisson Hotel, The ARC of Maryland, in collaboration with the Maryland State Department of Education, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Governor's Office for Individuals with Disabilities, and the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council is hosting a conference on transitioning students with disabilities.  Entitled "Transition 2001: I Didn't Know It Was Possible", the conference is designed for school transition coordinators, persons with disabilities, families, vocational rehabilitation counselors, service coordinators, adult employment providers, and anyone interested in increasing meaningful work and career opportunities for transitioning youth with disabilities.

Workshops will be presented on various topics, including self-determination, supported business ventures for persons with significant developmental disabilities, opportunities for transitioning youth with mental health needs, national transition trends, promising practices, and federal legislation. Dr. Robert Pasternack, Assistant Secretary, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services of the U.S. Department of Education, will be the keynote luncheon speaker.
