New Web Site focuses on
Genes and Autism

A new web-based genetics education tool for parents and family members of individuals with autism, funded by the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR), has recently been unveiled.

The web site, www.exploringautism.org, is designed to promote genomic literacy among families with a history of autism spectrum disorders so that they can better understand the genetic components of autism, the latest genetic research advances, and the potential implications of those advances. The web site is dedicated to helping families who are living with the challenges of autism stay informed about breakthroughs involving the genetics of autism.

Coordinated by the Center for Human Genetics at Duke University Medical Center and Tufts University/New England Medical Center, the web site is the first project of its kind funded by NAAR.  It's architecture allows visitors to navigate the site easily and locate useful information, read current news on autism-related genetics, and take part in an on-line survey designed to help researchers evaluate the genetic educational needs of families and other people who visit the site.

The web site is organized by the following key sections:

* What is Autism - Provides an overall description of  the autism spectrum disorders, including diagnosis  information and genetic conditions associated with  autism.

* Genetics Overview - Features a glossary of terms  used in genetics and an explanation of tools used to  help researchers locate susceptibility genes and infor- mation on recent investigations on certain chromo- somes.

* History of Autism - Includes a timeline of important  advances in autism diagnosis and autism research, as  well as genetics.

* Autism and Environmental Factors - Explores the  theory of complex inheritance and the possible rela- tionship between the environment and autism spec- trum disorders.

* Family Stories - Shares the story of the Flores family,  Raleigh, N.C., which has two children with autism.

(continued on next column)

* Frequently Asked Questions - Lists questions and  answers on autism and inheritance, what genes are  involved in autism spectrum disorders, and ongoing  genetic autism studies.

* Survey - On-line survey open to all users that is being  used to help the Autism Genetics Collaborative deter mine the educational needs of families and develop  additional educational materials.

NAAR funded the web site through a grant awarded to Margaret Pericak-Vance, Ph.D., Center for Human Genetics at Duke University Medical Center; and Susan Folstein, M.D, Department of Psychiatry, Tufts University/New England Medical University.  Information on the web site is evaluated by the Autism Genetics Cooperative, an advisory board made up of researchers from major universities and medical centers.

New Emergency Notification System
available for Individuals with Autism

Emergency Notification Systems, Inc., offers a system that provides critical protection for individuals with autism. It protects anyone who may run away or get lost, be mistaken by police as suspicious or on drugs, or simply taking medications that emergency personnel should know about during an emergency.

They offer identification products and a 24-hour support line that protects individuals with autism in emergencies. All of their identification products feature the toll-free number for this 24-hour support line. Through this support line, the parties involved will immediately be provided with detailed information about the individual's medical condition, prescriptions, health insurance, and other important information. They will also notify the individual's emergency contacts, including parents, relatives, and a physician or psychologist, that an emergency has occurred, where it occurred, and where the person is being taken.  They can also handle Powers of Attorney and other legal situations in an emergency.

They offer five different types of customized identification jewelry, including a key chain, a kid's clip, a bracelet, a necklace, and a shoe tag for those sensitive to jewelry.  They also offer an identification card that provides details about medical conditions, prescriptions, insurance information, and other important information.  In addition, they offer caregiver cards for those providing care to the individual to identify that they are the authorized staff/caregiver for that person.

For more information about their products and services, please contact the company by phone at (800) 303-5515.
