Announcing
plans for Parent Advocate Training
Parents'
Place of Maryland
is developing a new program to train parents affiliated with
support/advocacy groups who want to become parent advocates.
Among other responsibilities, these chapter-affiliated parent
advocates would work with other chapter members to prepare
them for IEP meetings.
As proposed, the training program would involve several
2 - 3 hour sessions on a number of topics, including the
following:
Special education laws (IDEA/504/ADA)
Writing successful IEPs
Focus on IEP goals and objectives
Transition planning
Advocating for your child
Functional behavioral assessments
Discipline
Working with families
Communicating with parents and professionals
It is
expected that this training program would begin in October.
