Upcoming Workshop on
Early Intervention for
Sensory Integration


Sensory Resources is hosting a workshop on Friday, March 8th from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center in Ellicott City.  The workshop will feature Carol Kranowitz, author of "The Out-of-Sync Child", as well as Dr. Georgia DeGangi, a clinical psychologist and occupational therapist, and Dr. Lynn Balzer-Martin, a pediatric occupational therapist with a doctorate in special education and the developer of a screening program used for early identification of children with sensory and motor dysfunction.

Topics to be covered include the following:
 How dysfunction in sensory integration affects children
*   How sensory integration works
 What types of sensory-motor activities can be used to help children get in sync
 How to assess and treat sensory challenges in childhood
 What is the theory of sensory integration
*   How to find qualified therapists to evaluate and treat children with sensory integration needs

Upcoming Presentation on
Resolving Disagreements under IDEA


The Parents Place of Maryland and The Arc of Maryland are sponsoring a presentation about the methods available to parents for resolving disagreements under IDEA.  The presentation will be held on Saturday, April 6th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the offices of The Arc of Howard County, located at 11735 Homewood Road in Ellicott City.

The presenters will be Lisa Maddux, Section Chief and Ed Wulkin, Branch Chief of the Maryland State Department of Education's Complaint Investigation and Due Process Branch.  In their presentation, they will explain the State complaint process, how to file a complaint, MSDE's complaint procedures, and their investigative process. They will also discuss mediation and due process hearing procedures.

Upcoming Seminar on
Special Education Law


The Learning Disabilities Association of Montgomery County is hosting a Wrightslaw Seminar, entitled "Helping Educate Children with Special Needs: From Law to Action" on Saturday, April 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the University of Maryland Shady Grove Center in Rockville. 

The presenters will be Peter Wright, Esq., nationally recognized special education attorney, and Pamela Darr Wright, psychotherapist. These well-known presenters are the authors of the best-selling special education law books "Wrightslaw: Special Education Law" and "From Emotion to Advocacy"; they are also the designers of the Wrightslaw web site and on-line newsletter.

The admission fee is $45 in advance and $55 at the door. This admission fee includes a copy of "Wrightslaw: Special Education Law" and a copy of the Maryland Code of Law for Special Education, as well as a box lunch.

Upcoming Presentation by Tony Attwood


The Harbour School is hosting a presentation by Dr. Tony Attwood on Saturday, April 6th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Broadneck High School.

Dr. Attwood's presentation will focus on helping individuals with Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism create social understanding and friendships, including effective intervention strategies for social skills, making friends, and understanding the emotions of persons with social impairments; methods for improving social skills and building conversational skills; methods to develop imagination and visual thinking; and methods to help reduce anxiety, depression, and anger.
